    Galerie Lelong, New York is pleased to announce representation of Los-Angeles based painter Sarah Cain. Known for her vibrant color palette and playful language of abstraction, Cain boldly pushes the boundaries of painting. The artist centers her practice in feminist principles, dismissing historic conventions of her medium to construct a new, expanded language of abstraction rooted in the experiential. Her paintings often incorporate found objects or extend beyond the canvas into monumental site-specific installations that embody an emotive experience. 


    This marks Cain's return to Galerie Lelong, having worked with the gallery for nearly a decade leading up to 2020. "We're thrilled Sarah Cain is returning to the gallery. She is one of the most exciting and freshest voices among painters today, with her multi-dimensional painting and site responsive installations extending the medium's language. We're happy to welcome her back as we continue to strive to raise the profiles of women artists working to expand notions of abstraction," says Mary Sabbatino, Vice President and Partner of Galerie Lelong.

    Born in Albany, New York in 1979, Cain earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001 and her MFA from the University of California at Berkeley in 2006. A monumental installation by Cain, To—you know—you, is currently on view at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, California. Other recent institutional solo exhibitions include hand in hand, Colby Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine; My favorite season is the fall of the patriarchy, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Opener 33: Sarah Cain—Enter the Center, Tang Teaching Museum, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York; and In Nature, Momentary of Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville, Arkansas. Her work can be found in numerous public collections, including National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego, CA; Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA.
