In the second lecture preceding the exhibition Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium, art historian Claudia Calirman discusses the artistic movements of 1960s and 70s Brazil. If Brazilian art had any nameable identity during this period, it was precisely the lack of a coherent style. Calirman's talk analyzes trends in Brazilian visual art from this time, including works from disparate tendencies such as Concrete art, Neoconcrete art, Grupo Rex, Popcretes, New Realism, and New Figuration. Calirman explores the lasting influence of Hélio Oiticica's body of work and the creative ways in which artists responded to the Brazilian military regime.
