Galerie Lelong is pleased to announce the opening of Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive. The exhibition travels to BAMPFA from the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota, where it was curated by Lynn Lukkas, Chair of the Department of Art, and Howard Oransky, Director of the Nash Gallery. It was coordinated at BAMPFA by Apsara DiQuinzio, curator of modern and contemporary art and Phyllis C. Wattis, MATRIX Curator.
The first museum exhibition specifically devoted to the filmworks of Mendieta, the show is comprised of 21 films and videos, a selection of related photographs, and the documentary short Ana Mendieta, Nature Inside produced and edited by Raquel Cecilia, the artist’s niece. The largest collection of Mendieta’s filmworks ever presented as a full-scale exhibition in the United States, the exhibition features re-mastered filmworks by the late artist which are newly transferred to digital format by the Estate of Ana Mendieta Collection. Covered in Time and History is the result of three years of collaborative research into Mendieta's moving image practice conducted by the University of Minnesota, the Estate of Ana Mendieta, and Galerie Lelong. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive catalogue, the first comprehensive book on Mendieta’s filmography, which was recently awarded First Prize in the 2016 Museum Publications Design Competition from the American Alliance of Museums.
