Press Release
DOX Centre for Contemporary Art presents one of the most comprehensive overviews to date of works by renowned artist Krzysztof Wodiczko.
For the last forty years, the central themes of Wodiczko’s work have been war, conflict, trauma, memory, and communication in the public sphere. He combines art and technology with a critical approach, the goal of which is to address socially relevant issues and marginalized communities that are usually given little attention.
The exhibition will be Wodiczko’s first in the Czech Republic. In addition to the documentation of his projections on to public buildings throughout the world, DOX Centre will also present examples of his social designs, such as Homeless Vehicle and Alien Staff.
Krzysztof Wodiczko: Out/Inside(rs) is also the name of a new work by the artist
created especially for the exhibition, in cooperation with the DOX Centre. It presents videos of Roma children from the Šluknov Spur, a region found in the northern Czech Republic along the border with Germany, projected on to statues of historical Czech figures borrowed from the National Museum. The Šluknov Spur was recently the site of demonstrations initiated by neo-fascist groups against the Roma community in which children were traumatized by their fellow citizens’ expressions of racial intolerance.
The exhibition will also include a publication devoted to Wodiczko’s work and Roma issues embedded into a wider context of cultural, social, and political issues in Czech society.
