Jaume Plensa: Mirall: La Llotja, Palma de Mallorca, Spain

  • Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to announce Mirall, a solo exhibition by Jaume Plensa, curated by Walter Smerling, director of the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V., Bonn, Germany, on view at La Llotja, Palma de Mallorca, Spain from September 19, 2024 through February 15, 2025.

Through Mirall, Plensa reflects on the dualities of the world: body and soul, matter and spirit, light and darkness, opacity and transparency, past and future. Inside La Llotja, the most outstanding example of civil Gothic architecture in the Balearic Islands, two 7-meter-high stainless steel sculptures, Invisible Laura and Invisible Rui Rui, will be installed facing each other to personify this duality.

Speaking of the inspiration for the exhibition, Plensa reflects on a series of pairings: "The ancient tradition of classical Rome had Janus as one of its main Gods; he was a divinity with two faces: one looking to the past and the other to the future. The reflection of our face in the mirror, in the face of everyone else, of lovers and friends, of strangers and acquaintances...the duality of all our dreams still awaiting birth in the reflection of a mirror."

The exhibition is organized by the Balearic Government in collaboration with the Palma City Council and the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V., Bonn, Germany.
