Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to announce Jaume Plensa's new solo exhibition Invisível e Indizível, curated by Marcello Dantas, at Museu Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba, Brazil from December 7, 2022 to April 9, 2023.
The exhibition commemorates the 20th anniversary of Museu Oscar Niemeyer, a distinctive architectural landmark in Brazil.
With an artistic career spanning over 40 years, Plensa is an artist recognized worldwide for his large-scale works in public spaces that have established him as one of today’s leading contemporary portrait artists. “His search for the subtlety of form makes him stand out among the great sculptors of our time,” comments curator Marcello Dantas.
In his oeuvre, Plensa has used different materials, from glass, steel, and bronze, to less tangible elements, such as water, light, and sound. This contrast between materiality and immateriality is a striking feature of his work.
For this exhibition, an encompassing silence envelops the viewer through the monumentality of two large works with distinct constructions in dialogue: Silent Hortense (which stands over seven meters high) and Invisible Rui Rui. “The symmetrical confrontation between the two sculptures in the space is an unprecedented composition in his exhibitions,” comments Dantas.
Underlining Plensa’s practice is an ongoing pursuit to evoke the beauty in simplicity, and the sound of water which bears invisible yet powerful qualities is brought to the fore in his intimately-scaled sculptural installation Freud’s Children. Greatly influenced by philosophy and literature from diverse cultures, Plensa’s Song of Songs and Self-Portrait with Music are comprised of alphabets and musical notes that allude to the poetry of song and music, his works calling attention to the synchronous vocalization and production of sound across humanity.
